Governors' conference in Trinco postponed

The sixth conference of provincial governors scheduled to held in Trincomalee from November 26 to November 28 has been postponed indefinitely following protests by Tamil people in the east port town, civic sources said. Tamil residents had protested against holding the conference to collide with the the maaveerar day celebrations.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) sources denied reports that Governor's Secretary, Mr.S Amirthalingam, had been kidnapped by the Liberation Tigers. SLMM sources said.

Mr Amirthalingam was not abducted but had gone for a meeting to the LTTE held area in the district on an invitation by the LTTE for discussions about the proposed governor's conference.
