Two fibre glass boats belonging to the Fisheries Training School at Navalady, 4 km north of Batticaloa, were removed around 11:00 p.m. last night, by unidentified persons after they overpowered the guards in the training school premises, said sources in Valaichenai.
The boats were towed across the lagoon by those who removed them, said sources. Unconfirmed reports say the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is responsible. Sources also said that the guards were stripped of their uniforms and the loss of the boats, which were minus their engines, is estimated at 150,000 rupees. The Fisheries Training School, which is situated on one side of the lagoon, is in an area under the control of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), while the area on the farther shore is controlled by the LTTE. On Thursday, the LTTE removed a boat, and placed an explosive device in another, at the Satturukondan SLA camp.
