Explosions at Vavuniya SLA camp

[TamilNet, Sunday, 03 May 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Several loud explosions are being reported from the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) base in Vavuniya. The explosions are said to be ongoing since 12.45 p.m (06.45 GMT). However, a SLA officer, who did not wish to be identified denied the camp was under attack.

Unconfirmed reports say that stockpiled ammunition had been ignited and the area can not be approached.

One SLA soldier who was wounded in the explosion has been admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital said SLA sources in Vavuniya.

The SLA camp is 2 km south of Vavuniya town, and is adjoining the Sri Lanka Air Force air base.

The security was tightened in Vavuniya this morning following information that a Tiger motorcycle fixed with explosives had entered Vavuniya.

The special Task Force (STF) of the Sri Lankan Police manned several check points in the town and searched vehicles.
