A short circuit or an accident might have triggered the explosion yesterday in the main Vavuniya SLA camp which destroyed the entire stockpile of ammunition stored in an ammunition dump, said SLA sources in Vavuniya.
Two SLA soldiers who had gone into the ammunition dump just before the explosions started were killed in the blasts. Mortars, RPGs, assault rifles and explosives had been stored in the dump at the time of explosion, they said. The explosion occurred in the area where troops of Operation Jayasikurui hand over their weapons when they go on leave, said sources. Explosions were heard until 7 p.m. yesterday said local residents. Meanwhile, the Voice of Tigers radio said in its night transmission yesterday that a LTTE fighter, Navukkarasu also known as Sithamparam (Kathiramalai Anpalakan, Jaffna) died in a clash with the SLA in Moondumurippu yesterday.
