Incidents of typhoid increase in Vavuniya

Vavuniya district Deputy Commissioner of Health Services, A Ketheeswaran, has warned the residents of the district to take precautions against spread of typhoid in the district. He disclosed that there were positive identification of 14 cases in November, 20 in December and a three fold increase to 72 in December, civil sources in Vavuniya said.

Mr Ketheeswaran said the disease is spreading through drinking water and advised the residents to drink boiled water and to treat their wells with chlorine.

Villages of Pattakaadu, Kumankulam, Pandarikulam and Nagarpuram are the most severely affected by the disease, he said.

Illegal soft drinks have been banned for an indefinite period in the district, sources said.
