Protest march against Government discrimination continues in Jaffna

Jaffna district Thursday witnessed another protest march in a series of such agitations held against the discrimination shown by the government in providing relief to tsunami victims and condemning the killing of LTTE senior political leader Mr.Koushalyan on February between two Sri Lanka Army camps in the Pollonnorawa district in the north central province. The Federation of District Fisheries Co-operative Societies, Displaced Persons Welfare Societies, and several other civil groups jointly organized Thursday agitation, sources said.
Hundreds of civilians gathered in front of the Jaffna district secretariat Thursday morning around 11 a.m. and organizers handed over memoranda to the Government Agent. Thereafter the protest march began to move towards the Jaffna office of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), through Jaffna-Kandy road and Temple Road, sources said Organizers of the protest march declined the invitation of the SLMM Jaffna head to come for a discussion in their office. Later they met the SLMM Jaffna head outside the Jaffna district SLMM office and briefed him about their demands and handed over a memorandum addressed to the SLMM head in the island, sources said. Similar protest march were held on Monday by the Jaffna District Transport Sector, Tuesday by the Co-operative Sector and Wednesday by the education sector, sources said.
