Thambattai showcases model resettlement village

A model village in Thambattai in Amparai district, providing temporary accomodation for the families displaced by the tsunami, built by the Tamils Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), an NGO registered with Government of Sri Lanka and working exclusively in the NorthEast, was ceremonially opened Monday by the President of consortium of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Mr Manickavasagam, sources in Amparai said.
Thambattai model village is one of the eight such villages TRO is building in Amparai district, according to TRO officials. Senior Journalist Mr Sivapragasam, speaking at the inaugural event said: "Thambattai is a village historically steeped in language and traditions. Evidence of people inhabiting this village well before the South Indian
dynasities. Although the tsunami has brought about unprecedented destruction to the social fabric of coastal area families, they can now begin to rebuild their lives without waiting for handouts from the State." Director of Amparai district branch of TRO, P. Athavan said that his organization will always be in the forefront in providing humanitarian relief to need people in the NorthEast. Head of Political Wing of LTTE, Thamilini, commended the TRO for building houses to suit the climate of the area. Ownership certificates were awarded to families at the conclusion of the event.
