Three Sri Lankan Policemen, including one sub-inspector were killed and two injured when the Liberation Tigers attacked Policemen travelling in a tractor, this afternoon in Jeyalathgama in Cheddikkulam, southwest of Vavuniya, said police sources in Vavuniya.
The two injured policemen have been sent to Anuradhapuram hospital, they said. The policemen had come in a tractor to tow away a bowser that had run into difficulties at Jayalathgama. The gunmen opened fire from under cover and escaped, said police sources. Meanwhile, Mr. Olara Otunnu, UNs Special Representative on Children in Armed Conflict Areas met NGOs representatives and other prominent persons at the UNHCR office at Vavuniya this afternoon before he left for Madu, said sources in Vavuniya. Mr. Otunnu is expected to meet LTTE representaives in Madu. The Liberation Tigers said earlier that they had declared a cease-fire on Wednesday and Thursday (6 and 7 May) as an expression of its support for the visit of Mr. Otunnu. But the LTTE's announcement has not been reciprocated by the Sri Lanka Government.
