Students protest army killings in Jaffna

[TamilNet, Monday, 07 March 2005, 14:11 GMT]
Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) Monday held a protest march from Nallur Kandasamy Temple to the office of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) condemning the killings of a student and an elderly person Friday by the Sri Lanka security forces. Students of Technical College, Higher Technical Education Institute, Jaffna University and schools participated in the protest march in large numbers, sources said.

JUSU and Technical College Students Union handed over memorandum to the SLMM Jaffna head.

"SLMM should take steps to stop atrocities committed by the government troops on students and civilians," the memorandum said.

The killing of school student Thulashika (12) by a speeding army vehicle and Mr Kathirgamu (65) who was shot dead by army soldiers on Friday in Jaffna are violations of the ceasefire agreement. The SLMM should bring these crimes to the notice of the international community, the memorandum added.

The memorandum also condemned the attack on the headquarters of the International Federation and the residence of Mr.S.Gajendran, Jaffna district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian on Friday, sources said.
