Army ignores cease-fire - VoT
[TamilNet, Thursday, 07 May 1998, 23:59 GMT]
Despite the declaration of cease-fire by the Liberation Tigers in order to support the visit of Mr. Olara Otunnu, UN Special Representative on Children in Armed Conflict, to the Vanni, the Sri Lankan forces have launched a heavy mortar barrage from their positions near Mankulam and Kilinochchi, said the Voice of Tigers (VoT) in its broadcast this morning.
However, the radio did not mention the killing of three policemen yesterday noon in Cheddikulam. The Sri Lankan security forces blamed the Liberation Tigers for the attack. Meanwhile, Mr. Otunnu who left for Madu yesterday is reported to have arrived in Thunukkai, said sources in the Vanni. Mr. Otunnu is expected to meet a delegation from the LTTE today. Mr. Anton Balasingham, LTTE's Political advisor, and other LTTE officials will meet Mr. Otunnu. Mr. Otunnu is expected to return to Vavuniya this evening.
