Tsunami hit Trinco women demand 200-meter buffer zone removed

Hundreds of women mainly from Sinhala community Tuesday held a demonstration in front of the Clock Tower junction in the heart of Trincomalee town demanding that the 200 meter buffer zone should be removed and to expedite the rehabilitation of tsunami hit fishing industry, sources said.

Trincomalee District Women Organization organised this protest led by its President Ms Ariyawathie Galapathy, sources said. New houses should be given to fishermen who lost their dwellings in tsunami without further delay, as they are not in a position to continue to live in tent shelters. The government should take immediate steps to supply new fishing boats and fishing gear to fishermen affected the natural disaster, protested demand.
