Two persons were killed at a village in the Poovarasmtheevu grama seveka (GS) division, in the Aalenkerni area, near Kinniya, 14 km south of Trincomalee, due to intense shelling from a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp and police station in the area, said sources in Trincomalee.
A shell landed in a house at Poovarasmtheevu, which is a Muslim majority area, killing an old man and his granddaughter (not grandson as reported earlier), said sources. The name of the grandfather is Meera Saibo Abbas and the granddaughter is seven years old. The shelling which began around 12:00 midnight lasted about two hours. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Army sources in the area claimed that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had begun shelling last night and that a stray shell had landed on the house killing the two occupants.
