TULF advisor mooted as new Mayor

[TamilNet, Friday, 22 May 1998, 23:59 GMT]
The Tamil United Liberation Front's (TULF) legal advisor, Mr. Sivapalan is expected to be nominated as the new Mayor for the Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC), said TULF sources Thursday evening.

Mr. Sivapalan's name was suggested at a top level TULF meeting held in Colombo last evening where TULF leaders discussed future plans in the wake of the assassination of the last Jaffna Mayor, Mrs S. Yogeswaran, said the sources.

However, the final decision is expected to be announced when the TULF President, Mr. M. Sivasithamparam returns from India.

The TULF has 9 members in the JMC out of a total of 23 members.

The other parties on the council are DPLF(06), EPDP (06), and EPRLF (02).

The council seats were contested at bitterly fought elections held in January this year.
