[TamilNet, Wednesday, 03 August 2005, 08:53 GMT]
Interviews to recruit 2188 graduates as teachers (1684 Tamil medium and 504 Sinhala medium) and 727 graduates (629 Tamil mediums and 98 Sinhala medium) as Planning and Financial Assistants for schools in the North East province are to begin on August 4 in the districts of Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mullaitivu, Mannar, Vavuniya, Trincomalee, Batticaloa and Kalmunai and will be conducted till August 10, said Mr.R.Thiakalingam, Provincial Education Ministry Secretary.

The Colombo government has given permission to the NE Education Ministry to appoint graduates as teachers and planning and financial assistants to overcome the acute dearth for teachers in the northeast schools following agitation by the provincial education authorities, parliamentarians and teacher trade unions, sources said.

4964 Tamil medium graduates and 349 Sinhala medium graduates have been asked to appear for the interviews based on the results of the competitive examination held for the recruitment by the Department of Examination last year. Of this only 2915 will be selected as teachers and Planning and Financial Assistants and to be posted in NE schools in the coming months, he said.

Interviews will be held in the education zonal offices of Jaffna, Killinochchi, Mannar, Vavuniya, Batticaloa and Kalmunai and for Trincomalee in Provincial Education Ministry.

2416 candidates are to appear for the interviews from the Jaffna district, 872 from Batticaloa district, 590 from Kalmunai district, 215 from Trincomalee district, 153 from Vavuniya district and 115 from Mannar district, he said.

Meanwhile 48 graduates to teach in English medium have been appointed as teachers in NE schools with immediate effect. Majority of them are Tamils and the rest Muslims, education sources said.
