Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri is to be promoted full-fledged Admiral on September 01 and is to continue as the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) in charge of Sri Lanka's defenses and the security establishment, according to defence sources in Colombo.

Rear Admiral Wasantha Karanagoda is serving as the Commander, Eastern Naval area that has its headquarters in Trincomalee and also the Co-ordinator-in-Chief of Security Forces and Police in the Trincomalee district. The decision to appoint Rear Admiral Wasantha Karanagoda as the new chief of the SLN was taken at a meeting held in the Presidential Secretariat with President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge in the chair and attended by the
commanders of the three armed forces and the Inspector General of Police on Thursday, the sources said. The Commander of the Navy is assisted by the Chief of Staff, Director Generals and Directors comprising the Board of Management (BOM) and Board of Directors (BOD) of the Sri Lanka Navy. Sri Lanka's Navy has five Area commands, Northern, Eastern, Western, Southern, and North Central, each under the control of a flag officer.
