Large number of women, majority of them internally displaced currently sheltered in welfare centres and refugee camps across Jaffna district, took oaths at an event held Sunday at the Jaffna University Kailasapathy Auditorium to make the Tamil Resurgence Convention scheduled to be held on 30 September in Jaffna town a success, sources said.

Ms Padmini Sithamparanathan, Jaffna district Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian presided over the event.

More than thousand women and students participated in the event. Committees including undergrads formed in the event Sunday began their village-level awareness campaign to make the proposed Jaffna Tamil Resurgence Convention a success, sources said.

Jaffna Tamil Resurgence Convention is to be held to reiterate to the international community the legitimate political aspirations of the Tamil people in the Jaffna district, which has been embodied in the Vavuniya Declaration and later confirmed in the Killinochchi and Mullaitivu conventions, sources said.
