Epidemic among tsunami affected families in Trinco

Measles, a virus infection is on the increase among tsunami-displaced families sheltered in temporary structures at Kallady in Eachchilampathu division in Trincomalee district, health offcials in the eastern port town said.

Health authorities with the financial assistance of the International Organization of Migration (IOM) have taken preventive measures against the spread of the disease, they said. IOM volunteers rushed to Kallady where about 35 persons were identified with measles. Immediately they were separated from other inmates. About two hundred children between the ages 1-12 were given preventive injection, health officials said.
