The school was occupied by the Sri Lankan Army (SLA) during 1996 'Sathjeya' offensive and resumed classes in 2000 after Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam recaptured Kilinochchi in the 'Unceasing waves' offensive in 1998.

Meanwhile, Killinochchi St. Teresa Girls' College held its inter-house sports meet with Ms. Sulogini, Karachchi Regional Secretary as chief guest and presided by its principal Ms. Jeyanthi Thanabalasingam on Tuesday, education officials said.

SLA forced Killinochchi Central College to move to Akkarayan to use the school buildings as a key logistical centre for during its war with the Tigers.

The remains of one of the College buildings destroyed by the Sri Lanka armed forces is preserved in its ruined state as memorial of the invasion, college officials said.
