Vote counting to take place in district secretariats

Counting of votes in the forthcoming local council election scheduled to be held on 30th March will be held in the district secretariat complex of each district throughout the island instead of earlier practice that in each local authority area counting took place, election department sources said.
Ballot boxes from all polling stations will be brought to the district secretariat by road and by air and sea where inaccessible by road, election department sources said. In past local authority was divided in to wards and polling was held to each ward and the candidate who polled highest number of votes were declared elected under the first past post system. Every thing took place at the polling station allocated for each ward. Later with the introduction of the preferential voting system under the proportionate representation the counting took place in each local authority office and results were announced on the basis of votes received by each political party or independent group, sources said. Department of Election is endeavoring implement the counting system now being implemented for the parliamentary election. All ballot boxes will brought to one place, the district secretariat and the counting will take place separately to each local authority under the supervision of the District Returning Officer, election department official said.
