NorthEast Governor visits Amparai district

Rear Admiral (Retd) Mohan Wijeyawickrema, Governor of the North East Province, is on a working tour to the Amparai district since Sunday, sources in Amparai said. He addressed heads of government departments at Amparai district secretariat Monday and at an event held at Ullai-Sarvothayapuram in Pottuvil electorate Sunday he handed over the first permanent house of the seventy constructed with the funding of the Netherlands to a tsunami-affected family from Pottuvil Jalaldeen Square, sources said.
After attending a conference at Amparai district secretariat Monday morning he visited Sammanthurai district hospital which is struggling to function with outdated medical equipment which have not been modernized for several decades. Hospital development Committee officials told the Governor the urgent need to improve the facilities. Mr.A.L Saleem, President of Maligawatte Young Men Muslim Association (YMMA) told the Governor the difficulties of health volunteers who are awaiting permanent appointments. Those who served for several years as health volunteers are left out when selected candidate for permanency, Mr.Saleem pointed out. The Governor wanted the parties concerned to make appeals to the respective authorities against the discrimination. He also promised to look into the issue, sources said. The Governor visited the housing scheme World bank funcded North East Housing Reconstruction Programme (NEHRP) at Meeranagar in Ninthavur. The Governor is to address authorized officers and special commissioners of local government authorities in the Amparai district at a conference to be held Tuesday at Amparai district secretariat, sources said.
