Tamil language seminar begins in Trincomalee

Two-day Tamil Language seminar for students taking 2006- GCE Advanced Level Examination began Tuesday in Trincomalee Vivekananda College. The seminar is being organized under the guidance of Trincomalee Zonal Education Office and sponsored by the Organization For Refugees Rehabilitation (OFERR) to raise the declining standard of Tamil language skill among students in the Trincomalee district, organizers said.

Mr.K.Thilakaretnam, Trincomalee Zonal Director of Education presided over the inaugural event. Ms S.Suriyakumary of OFERR distributed copies of a book on Tamil language written by Mr.S.Sivanirthananda, Assistant Director of Education free to all students who attended the first day seminar. Whereas in Killinochchi district ninety two percent of the students in the Arts stream in the GCE A/L examination held last year got passes in Tamil language, in Trincomalee district only forty percent passed, Education officials said at the inaugural event. Mr.S.Navaratnam, Principal of Vivekananda College made the welcome address. Mr.A.Jegasothy, Attorney-at-Law and Ms Suriyakumary of OFERR also spoke. Mr.O.V.Kulendran, Assistant Director of Education proposed vote of thanks. Mr.Sivanirthananda has been assigned to lecture the students for two days.
