Lectures resume at Jaffna University

Lectures at University of Jaffna suspended from December 2005 due to violence in Jaffna district and the presence of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops in the university environment, resumed for freshmen to Senior classes of students Wednesday, said an official of the Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU). Only a few out of district students attended the first day but JUSU official said most of the other outstation students will arrive soon.
Though the JUSU demand for the removal of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers from areas surroundign Jaffna campus remained unfulfilled, in the interest of students Campus administrators decided to restart educational activities, Student union sources said. In the meantime, an effigy of the newly appointed Vice Chancellor to the Jaffna University, Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole, hung by the head was seen at the entrance to the Campus Tuesday evening, and remained till the close of Wednesday.
