In Killinochchi district eleven schools are still functioning with basic facilities in cadjan huts. Educational facilities have to improve if our students are to become skilled workers and intellectuals in a global community which is advancing rapidly in the use of technology," said Mr.T.Lankaneson, Project Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded North East Community Restoration Development (NECORD) programme participating as the chief guest at the annual prize giving celebration of the Vavuniya Saivapragasa Ladies College held during the weekend, sources said.
Ms Uma Rasiah, Principal, presided. Mr.T.Lankaneson further said that the NECORD has allocated about 300 million rupees this year for the development of Vavuniya district. NECORD has already constructed new buildings in fifty-one schools in the Vavuniya district. He assured that NECORD will provide ten million rupees for the construction of a three-storied building and one hundred thousand for the purchase of books to the school library for the Saivapragasa Ladies College. He cited an instance where he saw about twenty computers given to a school were covered with white clothes. The Principal replied that he had covered these computers with white cloths from being damaged by students. "How can students learn computer technology if the school administration adopts this policy?" he asked. The knowledge of English language and computer literacy is very vital for bright future of the younger generation. About forty thousand graduates have been given employment. But it is sad to state that majority of these graduates are without the knowledge of English language, he said.
