Germany assists Jaffna, Kilinochchi Farmers' Organizations

The German Technical Co-operation (GTZ) on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Co-operation and Development (BMZ), handed over tractors to Farmers Federation in Jaffna District, said a press release issued by GTZ Thursday. The release added that GTZ, in co-operation with the Ministry for Nation Building and Development, has also dedicated a new school and Pre-School in Thadduvankoddy village in Kilinochchi district, on 1st March.

German Assistance to Farmer's Organisations: Five "Massey Ferguson - 240" tractors were provided to Delft Farmer Federation and Farmer's Organisations in Pokkarappu, Nithiyaveddai, Chempiyanpattu in the Jaffna District and Thadduvankoddy in the Kilinochchi District. The Farmers' Federation will maintain the tractors and rent it out to these members in exchange for a small operational and maintenance fee. To restart farming activities, Farmer Organizations also have been supported with seeds and tools such as Water Pumps, Sprayers and Watering Buckets.
Mr. Sundaresan, the Assistant Commissioner, Department of Agrarian Development, Mr. Patrick, the Assistant Government Agent, Delft, Mr. Gobalasingam, President Multi Purpose Co-operative Society, Delft and Members of the Delft Farmers' Federation, Mr. Wolfgang Garatwa, GTZ-Principal Adviser to Northern Rehabilitation Project (NRP), together with other GTZ staff participated in the handing-over ceremony.
Besides, GTZ has also provided assistance to NRP in its food aid program on behalf of the German Federal Government. The project was implemented to support the population in the North of Sri Lanka to adequately cover its food requirements . Special support has been given to the elderly, widows and children by supplying food rations .
German Support for new Educational Facilities: GTZ, in its first phase, had already assisted the resettlement of internally displaced people of Thadduvankoddy (IDPs), in their village since 2004. In the second phase, the Thadduvankoddy Kannaki Amman Vidyalayam, with an adjacent Teachers Quarters for six teachers was built.
Thadduvankoddy is located near the Elephant Pass and because of its strategic position during the armed conflict, it was completely destroyed and abandoned by the villagers in 1990. The population of Thadduvankoddy village lived for a long time as IDPs in so-called welfare centers.
Principal Advisor Mr. Wolfgang Garatwa of the NRP and the Kilinochchi Zonal Director of Education, Mr. T. Kurukularajah opened the new school and pre-schoool which will enable all 75 children of Thadduvankody to receive education.
