The newly elected council, which is to start functioning from April 15, will have twelve members- 10 from the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) and 2 from the Independent Group. Of the twelve members nine are Tamil members and three are Muslims. The ITAK fielded fourteen Tamils and two Muslims for the Trincomalee UC. The independent group that fielded candidates consisted of five members from the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), four from the United National Party (UNP), 2 from the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and five from the North East Sinhala Organization (NESO) polled 4286 votes against 16,368 votes polled by ITAK and qualified for two members to the newly elected council.

The two members are Muslims- Mr. Sultan Farook of UPFA polled 1650 preferential votes and Mr. Noor Mohamed of UNP polled 1286 preferential votes. Sinhalese and other Muslim candidates in the list received preferential votes less than thousand, sources said.
