Mannar Police Monday afternoon arrested Second Lieutenant Dissanayake of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) on a complaint made by Mr.Upali, a Reserve Police Constable (RPC) that the navy officer, under the influence of liquor, had assaulted him Sunday night, Mannar Police sources said.
The navy officer is now being detained in the Mannar Police Station, police sources said. The complainant and the suspect have been working in the SLN detachment in Sunny Village in Mannar. After Mr.Upali registered the complaint he was taken to the Sunny Village navy camp and kept under custody. However Mr.Upali through his walkie-talkie had informed the Mannar Police that he had been forcibly kept inside the SLN camp with serious injuries caused by the suspect, police
sources said. On receipt of the information Mannar police had rushed to the Sunny Village navy camp at about 11.30 pm Sunday night and tried for about one hour to enter the navy camp. Only Monday early morning around one a.m. the police were able to enter the navy camp and rescued the injured police constable who was immediately taken to Mannar general hospital. He was later transferred to the Anuradhapura general hospital, police sources said.
