"Upsurging Force" claims responsibility for Mattuvil, Vavuniya attacks

Local media in Jaffna received faxed messages Sunday from "Upsurging Peoples' Force," claiming responsibility for the claymore attack near Vavuniya Joseph camp on Saturday where five Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were killed and ten wounded. The clandestine force operating in Sri Lanka Army controlled areas, also claimed responsibility for a claymore attack Sunday morning in Mattuvil where one SLA trooper was killed and another injured, media sources in Jaffna said.

Following is the translation of the Tamil message:

"Sri Lanka Intelligence operatives and collaborating paramilitiaries have killed several Tamil civilians in Vavuniya district recently. Many Tamils have also been killed in Trincomalee and Jaffna.

"We suspended our operations to create a conducive environment for peace talks in Geneva to be successful. But, Sri Lanka Government paid scant respect to our efforts towards peace and have escalated attacks on our people again.

"Our people can be safe only when the enemy is driven out of our areas. That is why we have resumed our operations with an attack on the SLA soldiers near the Joseph camp in the High Security Zone. We will not rest until we chase the enemy from our land," said the communique issued by the "Vavuniya branch" of "UPF".

In a simultaneously released separate communique in Jaffna, the group said:

"As a response to attacks by the SLA on Tamil civilians in Thenmaradchy and across Jaffna district, we have resumed our attacks on the Sri Lanka Army and the paramilitaries. We will no longer remain content at the illusion of peace. We urge people to move to safer areas and to give us full cooperation. We will devise new formations and will attack the enemy until he is chased away from our lands."

The "Jaffna UPF" claimed responsibility for the Sunday morning claymore attack in Mattuvil, Thenmaradchy.
