Offices of the North East Provincial Council, non-governmental
organizations, co-operatives societies, and post offices located in the Trincomalee town did not function Monday as employees of these institutions began a 3-day boycott in protest to the abduction of Selvarajah Gajanathan, a Co-operative Development Officer (CDO) by an unidentified
person in civil at Sri Lanka Army camp at Kaddaiparichchan on 1 June.
Selvarajah Gajanathan was abucted when he went to Kaddaiparichchan SLA camp to facilitate the transfer of dry ration relief from government controlled area to LTTE held Muttur east villages. Kaddaiparichchan SLA camp is located on the border of the territories controlled by the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). As usual shops are opened. Bus services are conducted without interruption. Provincial council education officers and teachers who are assigned to conduct the GCE A/L examination have reported for work, sources said. Selvarajah Gajanathan was assigned by the North East Provincial Department of Co-operatives to work in the LTTE held Eachchilampathu division to supervise the co-operative societies and to facilitate the transfer of essential food materials and dry ration relief supplied by the World Food Programme (WFP) from the Muttur Co-operative Society, located in the government controlled Muttur town, to co-operative society located in the LTTE held Muttur east. A representative of the employees said the Sri Lankan government should ensure the security of provincial council staffs and to trace the whereabouts of abducted co-operative officer. The whereabouts of Mr.Gajanathan are not known even after five days, civil sources said.
