Island-wide state of emergency announced

The Sri Lankan Government is expected to announce postponement of the forthcoming Provincial Council (PC) Elections due on August 28 following the announcement of island-wide emergency regulations today, said sources in Colombo.
In a letter to the Sri Lankan parliament the President Mrs. Chandrika Kumaratunge said that the emergency has been imposed "in the interest of the public security". The declaration of emergency is expected to be approved in the Parliament on Thursday. sources in Colombo said that the scheduled PC elections might be postponed for at least six months. On June 4 the government imposed strict censorship on the reporting of military action.
