Two SLN soldiers injured in Velani grenade attack

Two Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) soldiers were injured, one seriously, when unknown gunmen riding in a motorbike hurled hand grenades at the soldiers engaged in security duties in Vankalavady in Velanai Jaffna Islet at 11:50 a.m. Sunday, sources in Jaffna said. The seriously injured soldier has been transported to Palaly military hospital.

Two civilians were injured following indiscriminate firing by the SLN soldiers on pedastrians after the grenade attack, local residents said.

The attack was third within the last two months inside the SLN High Security Zone (HSZ) in Velanai. An SLN petty officier was killed on 6 July, and an EPDP supporter was shot dead in June.
