SL Police arrests 3 Tamils in Eravur

Eravur Police arrested Monday 3 Tamil youths in Iyankerni, 13 km north of Batticaloa. Residents said the youths, cycling towards a house of their friend around 8:00 p.m., were arrested by the policemen who were hiding along the street. Eravur Police claimed that the youths were in possessing 3 grenades.

Police produced the youths, Yogendran Ravichandran, 22, from Chenkalady Market Road, Yogarasa Rajaviji,19, and Rajasingam Kugan, 20, both from 10th Mile Post in Kommathurai, before Batticaloa Magistrate M.H.M. Ajmir, who ordered remand for the youth, legal sources said.

The Police told the Magistrate that the arrested youth were carrying grenades and alleged that one of the youths were involved in the killing of a Police Constable, M. Riyal, who was shot dead last month along the Eravur -Punnaicholai road.

Iyankerni is a neighbouring village of Chenkalady and Kommathurai.
