Police arrest Jaffna couple

[TamilNet, Saturday, 05 September 1998, 10:52 GMT]
The Sri Lankan Police at Kankesanthurai (KKS) produced a young couple accused of being members of the LTTE in the Jaffna district courts yesterday.

The Police told courts that the couple, Nagan Balasingham, 19 and Balasingham Jeyarani, 18 of Karaveddy had surrendered to the SLA at Nelliyadi on August 23 and confessed to the security forces that they were trained to handle weapons and were members of the Liberation Tigers.

The Jaffna judge M.Thirunaavukkarasu ruled that they be sent to the high security Rehabilitation Camp in Bandarawela in the central province for a month.

Sources in Nelliady, however, said that the couple had gone to the Nelliady SLA camp on August 23 to find out why the SLA had come looking for them the day before while they were away from home.

The couple got no explanation, but were arrested on the spot and detained in the camp. Later, the SLA handed them over to the Sri Lankan Police at KKS on Wednesday, September 2.

The couple were sent to Trincomalee by ship yesterday afternoon.
