Sri Lankan Special Task Force troops in Kanjirankudah STF base intensified artillery fire towards Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) controlled Kanchikudichcharu, Vinayakapuram and Thankavelauthapuram areas Sunday evening at 3:00 p.m., LTTE's Military Spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan said. Civilians in the LTTE controlled area were forced to flee and take refuge at safer locations.

Civilian settlements in LTTE territory came under artillery attack Saturday night.

The STF, organised under the Sri Lankan Police department, is a counter-insurgency arm of the Sri Lankan forces, is in charge of defensive, offensive and covert operations in Amparai district.

A month ago, on September 06, the Tigers repulsed an offensive launched by the STF towards LTTE controlled Kanchikudicharu area.

The STF in Amparai district was allegedly responsible the massacre of 10 young Muslim workers, who went to repair the sluice gates of Rattal Kulam, an irrigation tank, southwest of Pottuvil on 18 September.
