Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers shot dead a youth near Athiyady Hindu Temple on Beach Road in Valvettithurai, soon after a claymore attack triggered by unidentified persons killed a SLA trooper at the same place Tuesday morning around 9:30 a.m, said Valvettithurai residents.

SLA sid that the youth tried to escape after hurling a grenade at them killing one of their soldiers, but local witnesses said that youth was walking along the Beach road when the SLA shot at him.

Point Pedro Magistrate K. Ariyanayagam, visiting the site of the shooting, ordered the dead body to be kept at the Valvettithurai hospital morgue for identification after holding inquest into death, said hospital sources.

The killed youth is from Udupiddy from the information found in his identity card, according to hospital sources.
