Reports from Jaffna said that the cortege of the slain Jaffna Mayor Pon Sivapalan was slowly winding its way through the streets of Jaffna to the Kombayan Manal cemetry.

About six hundred people attended the funeral meeting at the TULF office and about two hundred people followed the cortege of the mayor to the cemetry.

Only V.Anandasangari and Mavai Senathirajah of the TULF leadership were in Jaffna for the mayor's last rites.

Four of the party's five MPs, Dr.Neelan Thiruchelvam, Joseph Pararajasingham, K. Thurairajasighan and P. Selvarajah, stayed back in Colombo. The fifth R. Sampanthan is abroad.

The body of Jaffna mayor Pon Sivapalan was cremated this afternoon around 2.15 p.m at the Kombayan Manal cemetry. His brothers Pon Veluppillai and Pon Sivakumaran set fire to the pyre.
