An Sri Lankan citizen has filed an application in Sri Lanka's Supreme Court challenging the legality of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the United National Party (UNP). The MoU has been signed by the two parties to solve identified issues giving top priority to the ethnic conflict.
The petitioner, S.Wijepala, has cited two signatories of the MoU, the General Secretary of the SLFP, Maithiripala Sirisena, and Malik Samarawickrema, Chairman of the UNP at that time of signing the MoU, in his filings to the court, legal sources said. The SLFP is the main constituent of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government and UNP is the main opposition in the current parliament.
