One police sergeant killed in grenade attack in Pallimunai

One police sergeant was killed and three constables were injured when an unidentified person lobbed a grenade on a group of police personnel who were on duty near the Pallimunai St.Lucia Church premises in Mannar district Monday early morning around 1:30 a.m.

Following the explosion people gathered in the church premises had fled from the site as additional police personnel rushed to the scene started firing at random in the area.

The dead police constable has been identified as Sergeant Somapala and his body has been lying in the Mannar general hospital mortuary.

The three injured police personnel were first admitted to the Mannar general hospital around 2:00 a.m.and later transferred to Anuradhapura general hospital by air force helicopter.
