Hundreds of people lined up infront of a residence near Hospital Road in Jaffna town Thursday where statue of St.Mary had shed 'blood of tears' from her eyes, residents in Jaffna said. The statue was moved to the nearby St.John's Baptist Church under the custody of its pastor when it became difficult to control the increasing number of people curious to witness the "miracle," sources in Jaffna said.
Eye witnesses said that marks of wet blood stains were running from the eyes of the statue. Locals believe that this spells a bad omen for people of Jaffna. Residents recalled a similar "miracle" that occurred before the 1995 human exodus when hundred thousands of people fled Jaffna to escape military offences of Sri Lanka Army (SLA). The present military maneuvers of the Sri Lanka Army in Jaffna Peninsula, has further compounded the fears that war is imminent in Jaffna, and that would bring unprecedented devastation and destruction, residents said.
