Hundreds of farmers in LTTE held territory in Mannar district cultivating subsidiary food crops and paddy have been undergoing severe difficulties to sell their produce at good price in the government controlled areas or to buy seed materials and other needed materials needed for their cultivation after the closure of Uyilankulam army check point in August last year, sources said. Mannar Government Agent (GA) V.Visuvalingam is making efforts to arrange transportation to affected farmers, sources said.
Mannar GA has been contacted the officials of the Department of Agriculture to facilitate the farmers of Vellankulam, Periya Madhu, Pandivirichchan, Kovitkulm, Kalliyady, and Adamban located in LTTE held territory by providing government vehicles to transport their produce to government areas and to take inputs they needed for the cultivation through Uyilankulam army checkpoint to their villages, sources said. Government Agent is confident that officials of the Department of Agriculture will give a positive response to alleviate the hardship suffered by the farmers in LTTE held villages, district secretariat sources said.
