The Amparai District Muslim Theologian Council, known as Jemiyath Ulama Sabha (JUS), has appealed to the Muslim political leadership to take immediate steps to safeguard the traditional Muslim lands in Pottuvil electorate and other parts in Amparai district from being "swallowed by the chauvinist forces under the guise of tourism, archaeological reserve and environmental protection," sources in Amparai said
"Chauvinist elements are very active in Pottuvil area after the deaths of ten Muslim civilians that took place several months ago. These forces with hidden agenda have now taken steps to acquire traditional lands of Muslim community and to block out them for tourist projects, archaeological purposes and environment development schemes. "The Muslim political leadership must forget their differences at this critical juncture and should unite to safeguard the traditional Muslim electorate Pottuvil and other Muslim areas from the clutches of chauvinist forces," the JUS said in a memorandum sent to the leaders of all Muslim political parties.
