Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Monday morning conducted cordon and search operation in
Thiriyaai, a traditional Tamil village located about 42 km off north of
Trincomalee town along Trincomalee-Thennamaravaady road. The operation was
launched following the attack on a group of SLA soldiers Sunday night in
which one soldier sustained injuries.
The injured soldier had been admitted at the Trincomalee general hospital. Tension prevailed among the resettled Tamil families in the village when SLA soldiers entered each house and subjected occupants to severe
interrogation. Currently about three hundred families have been resettled
in Thiriyaai.. The entire Thiriyaai village was displaced in 1990 following
offensives by the Sri Lanka armed forces. About 1500 Tamil families were living in the village at that
time of displacement. Resettlement of displaced commenced immediately after
the signing of the ceasefire agreement by the then government led by Ranil Wickremasinghe and LTTE leader Velupillai Pirapaharan in February
2002.
