A group of JVP parliamentarians led by Wimal Weerawansa, the propaganda secretary, with hundreds of supporters and district organizers of Jathika Viumukithi Peramuna (JVP), demonstrated Wednesday afternoon outside the British High Commission in Colombo. The protest voiced opposition for interference by Britain and condemned the debate held in the House of Commons in London regarding the internal affairs of Sri Lanka, sources in Colombo said.
The demonstration triggered severe congestion of vehicular traffic along Gale Road, Colpetty for nearly two hours. The party supporters along with Mr.Wimal Weerawansa, parliamentarians Anurakumara Tissanayke, Vijitha Herath, Sunil Handunnethi and Nihal Galapaththi marched from Colpetty junction up to the British High Commission. The parliamentarians were planning to hand over to the High Commission officials but since no one came out to meet the protestors, the disappointed MPs pasted the memorandum on the entrance to the Embassy before leaving the protest site. Mr.Weerawansa visibly agitated over the situation questioned, if the British High Commissioner can go to Kilinochchi to meet Mr.S.P.Thamilchelvan, the political head of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eeelam (LTTE) why cannot the British envoy meet the delegation of JVP parliamentarians at the entrance to the High Commission.
