Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers Friday distributed notices listed with the name of Principals of leading schools in Jaffna town and some students, branding them as members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), University students said. The notices distributed near the Jaffna Campus warned the listed persons that they will be killed if they fail to give up "terrorist activities." The notice was signed by 'Tamil Alliance to Save Sri Lanka,' sources in Jaffna said.
Jaffna Hindu College Principal's name was one of the four listed. "This amnesty is offered because you are students but if you continue to participate in hand grenade attacks, claymore attacks and other such activities, the death sentence passed on you will be carried out without any delay," the notice said, according to students. The notice has created shock and fear among the educational society in Jaffna. The student agitation demanding the release of the four high school students abducted recently has paralyzed all schools and educational institutions in the peninsula. The few students attending some of the schools went home when news of the notices spread across Jaffna district. The Jaffna University Student Union (JUSH) which had launched its own boycott against the intrusion of armed men into the University campus earlier had announced to end the boycott on Wednesday. As the SLA and its paramilitaries, alleged to be the abductors of the four students, did not free the abductees as demanded by the student community, the JUSU and Jaffna Technical College students joined the boycott Wednesday. Jaffna University and Jaffna Technical College did not function from Wednesday. The teachers in the peninsula too will be joining the students' agitation Monday, sources in Jaffna said.
