The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) has imposed restriction on the sale of fuel in Mannaar district. Fuel filling stations in Mannaar town have been ordered to sell a maximum of five litres of diesel to each vehicle and three litres of petrol to each motor bicycle for a day. Residents are allowed buy five litres of kerosene per day for their domestic purposes, sources said.
Fuel filling stations have been further instructed not to sell fuel in plastic containers. Meanwhile, army and police are monitoring all vehicles buying fuel from filling stations in Mannaar, sources said. In the meantime, restriction of sale of fuel to vehicles has affected smooth transport service by private sector buses in the area causing hardship to civilian passengers and government servants, transport sources said. SLA sources said these restrictions have been imposed to stop smuggling of fuel to LTTE held territory by sea.
