Jaffna Campus staff, students receive death threats

Students at Jaffna Campus called for a week-long boycott of lectures after armed intruders left "death notices" inside the campus Sunday night, student leaders said. The notice listed details of staff and students in the death list, and gave "Final Warning" to those who are involved in "terrorist activities" abetting and aiding the Liberation Tigers. The notice was signed by 'Tamil Alliance to Save Sri Lanka,' sources in Jaffna said.
Jaffna Campus safety officers complained to the Vice Chancellor (VC) Monday that members of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) intelligence have been entering the Campus and have been assaulting them during work hours. The Campus employees in a memorandum sent to the VC demanded safety to the workers inside the Campus. The Campus notices follow the distribution of "death notices" Friday which listed the name of Principals of leading schools in Jaffna town and some students, branding them as members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The notices distributed near the Jaffna Campus warned the listed persons that they will be killed if they fail to give up "terrorist activities." The Jaffna School boycott has expanded to Jaffna Islets, Thenmaradchy, Vadamaradchy and Valigamam after the abduction of four high school students in Jaffna two weeks ago.
