Court rejects FR petition against Champoor HSZ

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 17 July 2007, 17:06 GMT]
The Supreme Court Tuesday rejected the fundamental rights violation petitions filed by the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA) and its Chairman Dr.Pakkiyasothy Saravanamuthu challenging the gazette notification by the government declaring CHampoor in Moothoor division as high security zone. The three-member bench chaired by the Chief Justice Mr.Sarath N.Silva dismissed the FR petitions without taking it for consideration, legal sources said.

The other two members of bench were Justices Nihal Jayasinghe and Andrew Somawanse.

The Chief Justice said that no one captured Sampoor or any other areas in Moothoor division, and thus the court could not make a decision hastily.

CPA stated in its FR petition that the declaration of Champoor area as HSZ has deprived the fundamental rights of about fifty percent of the population displaced from being resettled in their lands.
