Young woman, youth, shot dead in Jaffna

Two unknown armed men on motor cycle shot dead a young woman Thursday around 9:15 a.m, at Palaali road in Thirunelveali, in the High Security Zone (HSZ) of Sri Lanka Army (SLA), and in a separate shooting in front of Jaffna University Medical Faculty Thursday around 9:00 a:m, armed men on motor cycle shot dead a youth at close range and seriously injured one of his companions, in the same area in Jaffna. Meanwhile Koappaay police recovered the body of an elderly man hacked to death Wednesday night, found in Koa'ndaavil east.
The young woman killed was identified as Rajasingham Subajini, 30, a resident of Naavaanthu'rai in Jaffna. Subajini was riding on her bicycle towards Nalloor temple along Palaali road when the gunmen shot her dead and rode away. The youth shot dead in front of the Medical Faculty was identified as Rajendram Satheeshkumar, 23, and his friend seriously injured in the shooting is T. Vignesawaran, 29. Both are from Kokkuvil East in Jaffna. Satheeskumar and his two friends were riding bicycles and conversing among them when the armed men closed upon them on motor bicycles and sprayed bullets on all three of them. The seriously injured Vigneswaran was rushed to Jaffna Teaching hospital while the third friend sustained only minor injuries. The elderly man recovered dead with knife slashes was identified as Kanthan Rathinam, 54. Koappaay police recovered the three bodies and handed them over to Jaffna Teaching Hospital mortuary Thursday evening. Meanwhile, Chandirakumar Lavabahan, 16, a student from Moo'laay south, had gone missing since 27 August after leaving home around 6:00 p.m, according to a complaint made by his family members with Jaffna Human Rights Commission.
