Basil Rajapakse appointed National List MP

Basil Rajapakse, senior advisor and brother of Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse is to be sworn in as National List parliamentarian when the parliament meets on Wednesday, parliamentary sources in Colombo said. His name has been forwarded to the Commissioner of Elections by the General Secretary of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Susil Premajayanth Tuesday to fill the vacancy created with the death of Mr.Anwer Ismail, a minister in the present government last week.

Mr.Dayananda Dissanayake, Commissioner of Elections has informed the Government Printer to issue a special gazette notification on Tuesday midnight appointing Mr.Basil Rajapakse enabling the latter to take oaths the next day, sources said.

Mr.Anwer Ismail was appointed National List MP soon after the UPFA came to power under the regime of former President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge on the recommendation of Mr.A.L.M.Athaullah who holds ministerial portfolio in the present government.

Gothabaya Rajapakse, Defence Ministry Secretary and Chamal Rajapakse who holds the post of Minister of Ports and Aviation are also brothers of Mr.Mahinda Rajapakse.
