Arrested youth in Detention Center says HRC

[TamilNet, Monday, 23 November 1998, 17:29 GMT]
Three tamil youths arrested last week in North Erlalai in Chunnakam are being kept in the detention center at Kankesanthurai (KKS), said the Jaffna Office of the Human Right Commission (HRC).

The youth, Arulanantham Sabesh (19), Sivasubramaniam Ariyaratnam (33), and Thevarajah Sarmilaraj (20) are being held pending further investigations, added sources.

The Jaffna Office of the HRC is taking actions to document the complaints about human rights violations and other excesses by armed groups and members of ex-militant Parties that are allowed to carry guns, said an Official of the HRC.

There are possibilities that the violations by the groups armed by the Government can be shown as 'State Terrorism,' added the official.

Extortion of money is also a violation of human rights. If people can provide information about these violations, we can take actions to stop such practices. The confidentiality of names of the people who provide the information will be preserved, and the HRC will ensure that their well- being is not affected in anyway, said the Official.
