Batticaloa Council demands use of Tamil

[TamilNet, Saturday, 08 November 1997, 23:59 GMT]
The Batticaloa Municipal Council passed a resolution that all entries made at the Sri Lankan Police stations in the Batticaloa district should be recorded in Tamil.

The motion was brought to the council by M.K Jalaldeen of the Muslim Congress who said that Tamils and Muslims in the region cannot know whether their complaints or statements have been recorded correctly as they do not know any Sinhalese.

He said that despite the presence of Police personnel who know Tamil in the Police stations of the district no effort to help people who know only Tamil has been taken by the authorities.

The Mayor Mr. Cheliyan Perinpanayagam and other members spoke in support of the motion.
